BREAKERS & LOW BACK PAIN

The first step to solving any problem, is to first identify the problem.
My question is, given that breakers often have a preference for rotating to one side over the other, would rotational balance exists, and how would it present?

  • There are various studies that examine UNILATERAL ROTATION (rotating to one side) in sports, such as baseball, tennis, racquetball, etc - but not specifically for breakin'.

  • There are also various dance specific studies that examine LOW BACK PAIN in dance - but not specifically breakin'.

Compared to highly structured dance forms such as ballet or modern dance techniques, the dynamic and highly individualized nature of breakin’ means there is very little to no research conducted. My hope is to continue this research so that we may learn more about how to body works, specifically with breakin’ vocabulary, to decrease injury risk and safe practice.
